Bullying

The Montpelier Schools Board of Education has an approved Bullying and Other Forms of Aggressive Behavior Policy (Po5517.01) which specifically prohibits bullying of or by any student or employee, with consequences identified for those acts. The definition of bullying is defined in the policy as:

Harassment, intimidation, or bullying means:

  1. any intentional written, verbal, electronic, or physical act that a student or group of students exhibits toward another particular student(s) more than once and the behavior both causes mental or physical harm to the other student(s) and is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student(s); or

  2. violence within a dating relationship.

"Electronic act" means an act committed through the use of a cellular telephone, computer, pager, personal communication device, or other electronic communication device.

The policy sets forth guidelines for the identification and reporting of bullying - as the overall goal of the initiative is the protection of students and their increased feelings of safety and belonging. The policy requires teachers and staff to utilize a variety of prevention and intervention activities and includes tools and resources that create environments of safety and respect and expectations of appropriate behavior.
